Sapa, locally known as Sa Pa, is a small town in the Hoàng Liên Son Mountains of northwestern Vietnam. The town is a popular base for trekking expeditions and every year it sees thousands of people that want to get into the green, rice terrace decorated mountains. The local minorities, chiefly the H’Mong, the Dao and the Dai have been accommodating trekkers for little over a century. In the Sapa region it is therefore common to stay with local families.
Organized trekkings in a group are the standard in the Sapa Region. Because trekking in Sapa doesn’t require a lot of experience, anyone will be able to join. Distances are manageable, but keep in mind that over 60% of the paths are sandy, making the walking a little bit harder.
